Hedge trimming and reduction from Gemzas

We look after all kinds of garden hedges, from low edging and formal topiary to long boundary hedges and tall conifers. A routine trim keeps the shape crisp and the growth dense. A reduction takes a hedge that has grown too tall or too wide back to a manageable size, which can let light back onto a lawn or seating area and stop it taking over a path or driveway. Customers have had conifers topped and long hedges brought back under control.

Timing and nesting birds

Most hedges are trimmed once or twice a year, between late spring and early autumn. Heavier reductions are best done outside the main nesting season, which runs roughly from March to August. It is against the law to disturb an active nest, so hedges are checked before any cutting starts.

Height, access and price

The price depends on length and height, how much needs to come off, and whether both sides can be reached. Tall hedges need ladders or platforms, and a boundary hedge may need access from a neighbour's side. Tell us roughly how long and tall the hedge is, and add photos from both sides if you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to cut a hedge?
Most garden hedges are trimmed between late spring and early autumn. Big reductions are better left until the nesting season has finished.
Can you reduce a tall conifer hedge?
Yes, we top and reduce conifers. Conifers such as leylandii do not regrow from old brown wood, so a big reduction is done in stages.
Can you fit in a hedge trim at short notice?
Where we can, yes. One Sevenoaks customer needed hedges cut quickly after their usual gardener cancelled, and we fitted the job in.
